It covers all stages of a project's development, from the initial concept to on-site construction.
Specifically, it includes:
- Preliminary Analysis of the Project and the Client's Needs
- Development of a concept that outlines guidelines and resolves critical issues. In most cases, this involves a visual presentation of ideas, showcasing lighting effects and solutions to specific problems.
- Preliminary design that defines all aspects of the project (layout, technical specifications, costs, illuminance levels)
- Detailed design in which, in addition to confirming or updating the preliminary design, construction and installation details are provided
- Artistic direction during installation and on-site assistance
- Definition of lighting setups and lighting scenes
These are the main phases of the project, and it doesn't matter whether they are applied to large- or small-scale projects. Obviously, these are guidelines, and each project will have its own specific approach, which will be defined in the initial phase.
Lamps and Lighting Fixtures
Carrying out a project may require not only the use of off-the-shelf fixtures but also the creation of custom-made elements.
These custom objects can be lamps with a particular aesthetic and/or function, but also furnishings that “work together” with light to create the desired lighting effects. An example of the latter category is a perforated panel that has no electrical components but, when constructed with certain design considerations, can be illuminated and become a distinctive light-emitting object.
The design of lamps and lighting fixtures can be an integral part of a project or an end in itself.
Lighting Design Calculations
However, lighting does not depend solely on the luminous flux of a fixture but also on the materials, colors, and shape of a space. Therefore, the data derived from lighting calculations—even if obtained mathematically by software—must be “interpreted” with the specific space in mind.
Merely adhering to the required values does not guarantee the success of a project; one must therefore analyze the data obtained from the calculations and use it to design conscientiously.
